Conor McGregor stripped off Featherweight belt

November 29, 2016 00:27 by MMA Admin

Dana White recently announced that Conor McGregor will be taking some time off to welcome his new child with long-term girlfriend Dee Devlin. Conor is expected to return in summer of 2017.

Yesterday Jon Anik announced that the UFC had stripped Conor off his Featherweight belt. Before the UFC 205 event it was mentioned that Conor would be forced to relinquish one of his belts should he win the Lightweight crown. This means that Jose Aldo is now the undisputed Featherweight Champion, and Anthony Pettis and Max Holloway will be fighting for the interim Featherweight belt at UFC 206.

No word yet from Conor about the situation.

Khabib gives ultimatum to the UFC

November 17, 2016 16:24 by MMA Admin

It's no secret that Khabib wants to fight for the title. He's made this clear to the UFC, however despite Khabib's desire to fight McGregor there is still no guarantee that he will be his next opponent. There is a sense that Khabib's frustration is growing, especially since he was originally offered two contracts to fight Alvarez at either UFC 205 or UFC 206, however Alvarez did not sign. In recent developments Khabib posted on Twitter what appears to be an ultimatum to the UFC.

I want to fight for @ufc title for respect but if I don't get my title shot next I have different plan I won't be fighting in UFC @danawhite

Conor McGregor's next opponent

November 16, 2016 04:50 by MMA Admin

Conor McGregor recently won the UFC Lightweight belt with an impressive victory over Eddie Alvarez, therefore making him the dual-division Featherweight and Lightweight champion. This opens up a number of options for Conor in terms of his next potential opponent. Typically the list of contenders for a champion would not be so long, but given Conor's opportunities across the two divisions, and rumours of another foray into the FW division, it is difficult to predict who he will fight next.

Jose Aldo
This may have seemed like an obvious matchup several months ago when Dana White said that Jose would be guaranteed a rematch after Conor's last fight with Diaz, and if Aldo beat Frankie Edgar. It seems however Aldo had to wait for his revenge (despite rumours of retirement) as Conor was then granted an opportunity to fight Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 for the Lightweight title. December will mark 1 year since Conor has not defended the Featherweight belt, and he's taken 3 fights outside of that division in the meen time, so his first title defense seems most pressing if Conor is wishes to retain the belt. Prior to the recent UFC 205 event Dana White said that Conor would be forced to relinquish one of the belts if he beat Alvarez. Given Dana's tendency to not keep his promises, and Conor's desire to keep active and hold both belts, it would only make sense that Conor grants Aldo a rematch, else he may be forced to give up the belt.

Nate Diaz
After their last match Conor hinted at a trilogy bout between himself and Diaz. Given the history between the two, and that they are both natural lightweights, this match seems inevitable, however more a question of when than if. Diaz has also said that he is not interested in fighting anybody other than McGregor. Will we see Conor defend his Lightweight title against Diaz?

Khabib Nurmagomedov
Khabib continued his unbeaten win-streak with a dominant display over Michael Johnson at the recent UFC 205 event to bring his record to a total of 24-0. Khabib's ground skills were devastating against top contender Michael Johnson, who despite rocking Khabib in the first round didn't seem to have any answers for Khabib once the fight went to the ground. There is no doubt Khabib has established himself as a top contender in the Lightweight division, and he was vocal between rounds, yelling at Dana that he wanted "Dana's Son" Conor McGregor as his next opponent. The Khabib vs Conor matchup seems to be in popular demand with MMA fans, and would also have the hallmarks of a classic striker vs grappler match. Despite Conor showing little interest in the match, stating that he thinks Khabib is a "pull-out merchant", this fight makes a lot of sense, and given that the UFC is currently hoping to expand in Russia, this fight could be a good segway given Khabib's popularity with his country-men.

Cain Velasquez out, Hunt in for Interim title shot

October 21, 2014 23:34 by MMA Admin

It looks like fans will have to wait a little longer to see the reigning UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez in action. Velasquez recently sustained a knee injury while training in preparation for his match with Fabricio Werdum.

Given the lengthy absence of Velasquez the UFC has had no choice but to instil an interim Heavyweight belt, and have chosen Mark Hunt to step up against the in-form Werdum.

The UFC announced today that it will be making its first trip to sunny Queensland by hosting HUNT vs BIGFOOT at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on December 7. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, October 10 at 9 a.m. AEST.

Tom Wright, UFC Director of Operations in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada said "Brisbane will represent the third city in Australia where we've hosted an event and we're all very excited to be bringing an amazing card to our fans this December".

Despite his last loss to Junior Dos Santos, Hunt has had an amazing run in the UFC and hopes to defend his reputation against fellow top HeavyWeight contenter Silva who also lost his last fight (to Cain Velasquez).

No doubt the Brisbane Entertainment Centre will be packed for this!

Congratulations Robert Whittaker

May 28, 2013 18:07 by MMA Admin

We would like to congratulate Aussie Robert Whittaker for his impressive win over Colton Smith.

Colton Smith who was also a winner of his season of the Ultimate Fighter had previously defeated highly regarded Mike Ricci in his finale.

It is safe to say that Robert dominated the fight, and despite his "controversial" strategy to fight with one arm down the risk paid off as he clinched a convincing victory. It was apparent by Colton's bloodied face that despite losing by TKO he was soundly beaten and throughout the fight was unable to enter his comfort zone by taking Whittaker to the ground and holding him down.

This was an impressive win for Robert against a tough opponent and we are excited for his future in the UFC. In general exciting times ahead as fellow Aussie Soa Palelei has been re-signed by the UFC and hopes to redeem his past efforts.
